Tanzanite Rings: A New Gem for a New Age

This rare, blue stone is only found near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is the result of volcanic blasts in the area. This stone was originally mistaken to be a sapphire but later identified correctly. Tiffany & Co. made this stone popular in 1960 with the marketing efforts to sell their jewelry featuring tanzanite. Once thought a replacement for the sapphire, it stands distinctly apart with its own characteristics.

All About Lab Created Diamonds

It is said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend but, now the question is, does that apply only to the mined diamonds, or synthetic diamonds as well? It was discovered in 1796, that diamonds were predominantly carbon. From that time on, every imaginable research attempt has been made using everything from lamp black and graphite under high pressure and high temperature to try to synthesis the diamond. The high pressure and high temperature research was in the right direction but unfortunately, none of the materials proved to be appropriate. In the 1930’s, something called tungsten carbide was invented and proved to be the perfect material for growing diamonds. In the 1950’s diamonds began to be synthesized at the same time in the United States and Sweden. In the United States, the success of synthesized diamonds is attributed to General Electric researchers and in Sweden, although it was not publicized, the success was attributed to a laboratory in Stockholm. At the present time there are some eighty tons of synthetic diamonds produced for industrial firms by such companies as DeBeers and General Electric.
