Making perfect rice with a Japanese rice cooker
Have you ever wondered how people could eat so much rice? Before travelling round the Far East I used to think that rice was a dish that could only be eaten with a decent Indian curry. The Indians know how to cook decent rice, but back in the U.K. we have boil in the bag rice. Surprisingly this is relatively good when it comes to rice in Europe. And let’s face it, boil in the bag rice really isn’t very good! So that is why I used to wonder, how can the Japanese, the Chinese and so on eat a diet based on rice? After all, it’s not very nice.
But after visiting many countries and in particular Japan I discovered that rice can actually taste really good. And that is why they have been eating it for centuries. Obviously back in the day they would not have used rice steaming appliances. However with the advances in technology, in particular Japanese electronics manufacturers, there is now a wide range of Japanese rice cookers that are available to help us cook rice as they do in the Far East.
These machines take all the guess work as well as hard work out of preparing a great batch of fresh and sticky white rice. Indeed rice served the Japanese way is supposed to be sticky. But not sticky as in a mushy paste of over cooked food but rather perfectly cooked grains of rice that subtly stick to each other. This makes it perfect for eating with chopsticks.
Now-a-days it is possible to find the best Japanese rice cookers available for purchase at reasonable prices in the United States and all over Europe. It has to be said that the best models are typically made by the Japanese. For example, Panasonic, Sanyo and the perhaps less well known overseas company Zojirushi. It is surprising because in fact it is this company that produce Zojirushi rice cookers that is far and away the most popular in Japan. Their machines range in price but typically are at the higher end of the scale. This is simply because they have such a good reputation and also make it child’s play to be able to cook lovely rice each time.
If you are interested in owning your own rice cooker then it would be wise to thoroughly research the topic so that you can find a model appropriate to your needs. They are not hugely expensive but first you want to think about how often you will actually use it before you dive in at the deep end.
