Electricity expense seems to be one expense we can count on. If only technology were at the stage where energy could be harnessed cheaply and abundantly. Surely if we don’t destroy ourselves first, we will eventually get there. Until then however, we will have to deal with the recurring electricity bill we get each month. It would therefore be prudent for us to do what we can to reduce this expenditure as much as possible without sacrificing too much if any of our comfort, in an affordable way. I am proposing the use of solar energy as a possible solution.
Now for those who have ever looked into what it would take to power one’s home using solar power, you already know that it can cost a huge amount upfront. The cost of the solar panels required can really be quite prohibitive. Even though eventually this should be recovered in the savings realised on the electricity bill, it is still a major obstacle for most people to go this route. Therefore, what I am suggesting, is not simply to go fully solar, but to make use of solar power where possible.
One way to immediately start making use of solar power, is with solar patio lights. We generally need to keep on the patio and outdoor lights at night, for security and recreational purposes. It makes sense therefore, to replace these lights with solar powered lights. They are already outdoors, so the solar panels can be placed in the path of the sunlight to charge the batteries, and you will still get the benefit of the outdoor lighting without incurring electricity costs. Another way to utilize the solar option without going fully solar, is to invest in a solar powered water heater. Assuming you already use an electric heater for warm baths and showers, then using a solar water heater will help you to save on electricity costs. The initial investment for the heater is naturally more than say for the patio lights, but it is a lot more manageable than trying to get solar panels to power the whole house.
Reducing electricity expenditure is an admirable and worthy endeavor. There are numerous ways to go about doing this. The partial solar power option is simply one way to consider. It also has the added benefit of being a green energy source, so you’d be helping the environment too, were you to go this route.
